“Undecided” is the wrong word for it.
Most entering students are still forming a direction, and the research is clear that this is healthy, not deficient. The advising field abandoned “undecided” years ago in favor of “exploratory.” So do we. The student is not lost; they are gathering the information that a good decision requires.
Indecision is a stage, not a flaw
Career indecision is the result of insufficient learning experiences; the student hasn’t met the right people or done the right work yet. The job is not to pressure a premature choice; it is to manufacture the exposure that lets a real direction emerge.
You discover direction by doing
Direction rarely arrives from an interest quiz. It arrives from a class that lights you up, a mentor whose life you suddenly want, a summer job that teaches you what you can’t stand. The program generates those moments on purpose.
The clock informs, never forces
Some doors close earlier than others, and the student deserves to know exactly when. We give the timeline as honest information and protect their options, so the choice is timely and informed without ever being rushed.

Ruling a direction out, with reasons, is progress. The exclusions are part of the record. They are how the student knows the direction they chose is actually theirs.
